Research comes first in the design process, and helps us determine our context and objectives. Graphic presentations of market research findings are extremely useful, and can reveal design opportunities.

For example, at left are market research “matrices,” where the axes indicate a product’s characteristics relative to others regarding price, size, aesthetics, feature complexity, color, etc. Gaps in a matrix can indicate design opportunities.
